I was down at Menards today at lunchtime and this dust collector was on sale for $299.99 (with rebate).

Here's some of the specs.

1100 CFM
6" inlet
1 1/2 HP
30 micron bag

Anybody familiar with this one? It looks like a pretty good deal. I would be able to set this up in a room off from my main workshop so anything that gets past the 30 micron filter bag wouldn't be much of an issue.

I have that one. I like it pretty well. It's only connected to one tool at a time, so I switch hoses between the BS, TS and DP. I'm using 4" hose, but plan to go to 6" when I get my thickness sander built. I upgraded to the 1 micron bags from Wynn Environmental. All in all, seems decent for a hobbiest.

Bear in mind that if it's set up to vent out of your shop space, that air will have to be replaced. Not such a problem in a temperate climate, but if you're using AC or a furnace, you'll be pumping out large volumes of heated or cooled air and $$.

Penn-State has their DC2000B on sale for $389, mine is coming Friday. It pulls 1500 cfm, is 2 hp (220 volts), and comes with a 1-micron canister. Really good deal. Their regular price is $500.

I'm close to buying the same unit except with the canister. With the canister, it gets down to 1-2 microns, then you don't have to worry about air exchange and your duct runs shouldn't be as long. Ducting eats up CFM and static pressure.

Ron has what sounds like a heck of a good deal, less than the Jet with canister, which adds about $100, IIRC. But shipping might eat up some of the savings compared to getting the Jet locally. No matter what, the Penn-State is definitely a step up, if you have 220 in your shop. The impeller is an inch bigger, which will give you a LOT more air moving capacity.

Shipping was $60 to Arkansas, but I had several fittings, etc included, too. Also they said they would include coupons to offset the shipping.

I have 220 at the breaker box already, just need to run the wire to the unit. I'm planning to hook it up sort of permanently with blast gates everywhere. I won't be using more than one machine at a time, and my runs are short, so I think it will function well for me. I'll post a pic or two when up and running.

I was on the Penn State site and I see the DC2000B with the 1 micron BAG is on sale for $260. With the $60 shipping that's only $20 more than the Jet. Plus you get 50' of hose.

What's the advantage of the canister?

Do you have to replace it when it gets dirty?

The canister doesn't have to be replaced. It has a self cleaning device built in. The handle on the top is simply turned about 180 degrees and it knocks most of the dust off the canister into the lower bag. When the lower bag is full it is emptied or replaced.

I'm leaning towards the Penn State now, with the 1 micron bag. That fits my budget and I assume I could convert it to a canister style at a later date.
